Over the last few years, some of you may have heard the grumblings of a modern grindhouse style film, called High on the Hog, starring horror legends Sid Haig (House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects) and the late Robert Z’Dar (Maniac Cop). Coming from the creative mind of Writer/Executive Producer Kevin Lockhart and his production company Hicktown Entertainment, along with Director Tony Wash (The Rake, Skeletons in the Closet), this has been a long journey from its inception to its premiere in the near future. Beginning production back in 2012, the film has gone through numerous changes, pick-ups, and re-edits and has finally come to fruition.
The release and premiere of the film will be next Friday, April 19th at the Arena Cinelounge in Hollywood, CA. If you happen to be in the area or feel like taking a trip out to Tinsel Town, I highly recommend being there. Hollywood’s Arena Cinelounge is the premier boutique art house theatre located in the heart of Hollywood, presenting the best in new feature films every night of the week. Arena Cinelounge is located at 6464 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028 on the lobby level. Sid Haig will be in attendance for a meet and greet on premiere night. If you’d like to purchase a ticket, click here. The film will then be doing a week-long run at the theater at various times.
I caught up with Lockhart and ask him what it was like as an independent film producer going through his first production.
“I have learned what it truly takes to create a movie from its inception as a concept to completing the final product to release to the public,” he explained. “I understand much better what my strengths and weaknesses are in the process and fully understand and appreciate the talent and specialization it takes to create a movie…Although it had its ups and downs, I couldn’t be more thrilled and truly enjoy writing and sharing my vision with the world. But the real talent are those people that made that vision a reality! It all comes down to surrounding yourself with super talented and creative people.”
This film is a true inspiration for any independent filmmaker looking to get a production off the ground. “I’m damn proud of the journey this movie has made and the family it created both on screen and on set,” added World of Death co-creator and indie filmmaker Tony Wash. “I am thrilled to see the reception to this crazy, sexy, trippy grindhouse flick from fans across the globe. Pack it tight!”
After seeing an early workprint of the movie myself, I have to say the revamping that was done in the editing room is nothing short of incredible. Taking the reins in post production and giving it a true grindhouse polishing editor B.A. “Ben” Lewandowski (co-director of Skeletons in the Closet) explained: “You will be hard-pressed to find another movie that is as innovative, exhilarating, and kinetic as this one. High on the Hog is a balls-to-the-wall thrill ride from start to finish.”
Following the Hollywood premiere, there will be a Midwest premiere in Chicago and a video release in the coming weeks, so stay tuned. With talent like Sid Haig, Joe Estevez, Ellie Church, Fiona Domenica, Jesse C. Boyd, and one of the final performances of the late, great Z’Dar, this is sure to be a cult classic in the horror and stoner community for years to come.
